Best time to go on safari in South Africa: summer vs winter

Wondering when to go on safari in South Africa? The good news is that there is no wrong time. Each season offers something different — the right timing depends on the kind of experience you are after.

Safari all year round

South Africa's top private reserves — Thornybush, Sabi Sands, Timbavati and the wider Kruger region — offer excellent game viewing throughout the year. Unlike destinations with heavy rainy seasons or seasonal closures, these areas stay open, with consistently high chances of big sightings.

Whenever you go, you are likely to see lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard and giraffe.

Winter safaris, May to September

Winter is prime safari season. These are the dry months, and the bush thins out — visibility improves and wildlife is easier to find.

  • Sparse vegetation, so animals are more visible
  • Wildlife concentrated around waterholes and rivers
  • Cool mornings and evenings, mild days
  • Fewer mosquitoes
  • Crisp, clear light for photography

Best for first-time safari-goers, photographers and serious wildlife lovers.

Summer safaris, October to April

Summer brings warmer days and afternoon thunderstorms, especially between November and February. The bush is denser, but it has its own magic.

  • Vivid green landscapes
  • Newborn animals, especially in December and January
  • Excellent birding as migrants return
  • Short afternoon rain showers
  • Warm days for the pool between drives

Best for returning guests, birders, couples and anyone who prefers a lush, scenic bush.

So when should you go?

  • Clear sightings and cool weather: May to September
  • Green landscapes and newborn animals: November to February
  • Fewer people and mild conditions: April or October
