The daily safari schedule
Most luxury lodges run two drives a day: a morning drive that starts just before sunrise, and an afternoon drive that begins mid-afternoon and ends after dark. Each lasts around three hours, though sightings can stretch that.
Morning drives begin with a gentle wake-up call, then coffee, tea and rusks. This is prime time for predators — lions, leopards and hyena still active after a night of hunting.
Evening drives include a sundowner stop, a South African tradition: a drink in hand while the light goes. After dark, spotlights pick out the nocturnal species — bush babies, owls, and the occasional leopard on the move.
Flexibility is part of it. If your guide hears of wild dogs hunting or a cheetah on the move, the plan changes.
