What to pack when going on safari
Packing for a South African safari can be a challenge — especially if it's your first time. From chilly early-morning game drives to warm afternoons by the pool and evenings around the fire, it pays to pack smart.
We have spent years exploring South Africa, and we know what is essential — and what just takes up valuable suitcase space. Here is our packing list to help you feel prepared, comfortable and camera-ready.
Safari clothing essentials
Lightweight, breathable, neutral-coloured clothing is key. Earth tones — khaki, olive, beige — help you blend into the environment, stay cool in the heat, and hide dust.
- Quick-dry T-shirts and tops
- Lightweight long-sleeve shirts, for sun and insect protection
- Loose-fitting shorts
- Lightweight long trousers
- A warm fleece or jacket — early mornings are cold from May to August
- Wide-brimmed hat and UV-protection sunglasses
- A small daypack for sunscreen, a jacket, tissues and lip balm
- Comfortable walking shoes or trainers
- A swimsuit, for the lodge pool or spa
You will not need hiking boots unless you are doing a walking safari. If you are unsure, we will advise based on your itinerary.
Toiletries and medication
At a luxury lodge you can expect high-end amenities — body wash, shampoo, conditioner. At a more rustic camp, pack your own.
- High-SPF sunscreen, SPF 30 or above
- Insect repellent
- Lip balm with SPF
- Personal medication, plus antihistamines and painkillers
- A basic first-aid kit
Most lodges sit deep inside private reserves, which means no quick trip to the pharmacy. Come prepared with all prescription medication and a basic health kit.
Gadgets, gear and extras
You will be watching — and photographing — some of the world's most remarkable wildlife.
- Binoculars, which are a genuine game-changer
- A camera, or a phone with a good zoom
- A power bank
- Travel adapters — South Africa uses type M plugs
- A reusable water bottle
- A book or e-reader for slow afternoons in camp
