Packing for a South African safari can be a challenge — especially if it’s your first time. From chilly early morning game drives to warm afternoons by the pool and evenings around the fire, it’s important to pack smart.

At Wandering Travel CO, we’ve spent years exploring South Africa and as a result, we know what’s essential — and what just takes up valuable suitcase space. Here’s our expert packing list to help you feel prepared, comfortable, and camera-ready.

Safari Clothing Essentials

Lightweight, breathable, and neutral-coloured clothing is key. Earth tones like khaki, olive, and beige help you blend into the environment and stay cool in the heat — and they don’t show dirt easily.

Here’s our go-to safari wardrobe:

  • Quick-dry T-shirts and tops

  • Lightweight long-sleeve shirts (for sun and insect protection)

  • Loose-fitting shorts

  • Lightweight long pants or trousers

  • A warm fleece or jacket (early mornings can be surprisingly cold, especially from May to August)

  • Wide-brimmed hat and UV-protection sunglasses

  • A small daypack or handbag (for sunscreen, a jacket, tissues, lip balm, etc.)

  • Comfortable walking shoes or trainers

  • Swimsuit or swimming costume (for dips in the lodge pool or spa)

Pro Tip: You won’t need hiking boots unless you’re doing a walking safari — if you're unsure, our team will advise based on your itinerary.

Toiletries & Medications

If you’re staying at a luxury safari lodge, you can expect high-end amenities like body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. However, if you're opting for a more rustic or budget-friendly experience, pack your own.

Must-haves include:

  • High-SPF sunscreen (SPF 30 or above)

  • Insect repellent (DEET-based or natural citronella)

  • Lip balm with SPF

  • Personal medication (and extras like antihistamines, painkillers, anti-nausea tablets, etc.)

  • Basic first aid kit

Note: Most lodges are deep in private reserves — meaning no quick trips to the pharmacy. It’s best to come prepared with all prescription meds and a basic health kit.

Gadgets, Gear & Extras

You’ll be seeing (and photographing) some of the world’s most incredible wildlife, so don’t forget:

  • Binoculars (trust us — they’re a game-changer)

  • Camera or phone with a quality zoom lens

  • Power bank / battery pack

  • Travel adapters (South Africa uses type M plugs)

  • Reusable water bottle

  • A good book or e-reader for lazy afternoons at camp

If your lodge has a private deck, plunge pool, or spa, you'll thank yourself for bringing some downtime comforts.
