Why Timbavati Private Nature Reserve

North of Sabi Sands and sharing the same open boundary with Kruger, Timbavati is quieter and less developed — fewer lodges, larger traversing areas, and a genuine sense of remoteness. It is famous as the origin of the rare white lion gene, still occasionally seen in the reserve today.

The bush here is classic lowveld: mopane and knobthorn woodland, seasonal rivers and open plains, with excellent general game and predator sightings without Sabi Sands' relative popularity.

Landscape & character

Lion (including the occasional white lion), leopard, elephant, buffalo, wild dog and classic lowveld plains game.

Signature experiences

Game drives, night drives and walking safaris across large, lightly-visited traversing areas.

  • The origin of the white lion gene, a genuine natural rarity of this specific reserve.
  • Lower lodge density than Sabi Sands means longer, less-shared sightings.
  • Who it suits: repeat visitors and those wanting Kruger-side exclusivity without Sabi Sands' higher profile.

Best time to visit Timbavati Private Nature Reserve

Dry season (May–September) for concentrated game viewing; summer months are lush and excellent for birdlife.
